What a smoothing treatment is

A Brazilian Blowout is a professional smoothing treatment. It works on the surface of your hair, smoothing the cuticle so the strand lies flatter and behaves more consistently. Smoother cuticles reflect more light, which is why hair looks shinier afterward, and they resist absorbing moisture from the air, which is why frizz calms down.

What it is not: a relaxer, a perm, or a permanent straightener. Relaxers permanently break down the internal bonds that give hair its curl. A smoothing treatment does not do that. It calms texture rather than removing it, and it wears off gradually instead of leaving a hard line where treated hair meets new growth.

That gradual fade is one of the best things about it. When it wears out, your hair goes back to being your hair. There is no awkward demarcation line to grow out or cut off.

What it will and will not do for you

What it does well:

• Cuts frizz substantially, including in humidity
• Reduces styling time, often by a lot
• Makes hair noticeably shinier
• Loosens and softens texture so curls are more relaxed and uniform
• Makes hair behave predictably, which is the part guests love most

What it does not do:

• Make curly hair straight without styling
• Repair damage that is already there
• Last forever, or last the same length of time for everyone
• Replace a haircut. A smoothing treatment on a shape that does not suit you gives you smooth hair in the wrong shape

Who suits it best

The guests who are happiest afterward tend to have frizz-prone hair that fights them daily, hair that gets unpredictable in humidity, wavy or curly hair they want calmer rather than gone, or a routine they simply do not have time for.

The guests we tend to steer elsewhere are people who want poker-straight hair with zero styling, people whose hair is already fragile from heavy lightening, and people who love their curl definition. That last one matters. If your curls are your favorite thing about your hair, a smoothing treatment loosens them, and some guests miss that more than they expected.

If your hair has been through a lot of lightening, we will assess condition before we agree to anything. Sometimes the honest answer is a course of bond building and conditioning treatments first, and smoothing later once the hair is in better shape.

What the appointment involves

Block out a few hours. It is a longer service than most people expect.

1. Consultation. We look at your texture, your condition, your color history, and what you actually want out of it.
2. Clarifying wash. Product buildup and minerals have to come off first or the treatment cannot do its job evenly.
3. Application. The solution is worked through in sections. Longer or denser hair may need additional solution, which starts at $33.
4. Blow-dry and seal. The hair is dried and then sealed section by section with heat. This is the longest part.
5. Finish. Rinse, condition, and style so you can see the result.

Aftercare, which genuinely decides how long it lasts

This is where the twelve week figure gets won or lost. Guests who follow aftercare get the full run. Guests who go back to a stripping drugstore shampoo can lose it in six weeks.

• Use a sulfate-free, sodium-chloride-free shampoo. Salt and harsh sulfates strip the treatment. This is the single biggest factor. Our Davines shampoo shelf is where we point guests.
• Wash less. Two or three times a week. Your hair will need it less anyway, since it stays cleaner looking.
• Watch the pool. Chlorine and salt water both shorten the life of the treatment. Wet your hair with clean water first and rinse straight after.
• Keep conditioning. Smooth hair still needs moisture. A conditioning treatment starts at $16.
• Do not overdo the heat. You will need less of it now. Use less.

Sequencing it with color

Plenty of our guests want both color and smoothing, and the order matters. A few principles we work to.

Color first, then smooth, is usually the safer order. A smoothing treatment can shift the tone of freshly deposited color slightly, so doing color afterward means the tone you leave with is the tone you keep. When we do run them close together, we normally leave a gap of a couple of weeks rather than stacking them in one day.

Heavily lightened hair gets assessed, not assumed. If your hair has been through repeated lifting, we look at its condition honestly before agreeing to a smoothing service. Adding a demanding treatment to hair that is already struggling is how people end up with breakage, and we would rather build the condition back up first with bond building and conditioning and smooth later.

Tell us your plans at the consultation. If you know you want to go lighter in three months, that changes what we recommend today. It is much easier to sequence a year of services in one conversation than to work around a decision we did not know about.

What it is like the first week

A few things guests are surprised by, so worth saying up front.

• Your hair will feel different. Smoother, slicker, and often heavier than you expect. That settles within a few washes.
• Your usual amount of product will be too much. Smooth hair needs less. Start with half of what you normally use.
• Your styling routine changes. Most guests find they can air dry to a result they would previously have needed a blow-dry for.
• Your haircut may want revisiting. Texture that used to add volume no longer does, so a shape built around that volume can read flatter. Sometimes a small adjustment is all it takes.

Will it make my curls straight?

No, and if straight is your goal this is the wrong service. A smoothing treatment loosens and calms texture. Curls become softer, looser, and far less frizzy, and they dry more predictably. If you want them straight you will still need to blow-dry or flat iron, the difference being that it takes much less time and holds much better.

Can I get a smoothing treatment if my hair is colored?

In most cases yes, and plenty of our guests do both. The sequence and the timing matter, so we plan it at a consultation rather than booking blind. If your hair has been heavily lightened we will assess its condition first and tell you honestly whether it is a good candidate.
