Why Our Whole Salon Runs on Davines
Share
Walk into a lot of salons and you will find four or five product lines on the retail wall. A bit of this, a bit of that, whichever distributor had a deal on. We deliberately did not do that at Whistle & Sway. Our Fort Worth salon runs on Davines, for color in the back and for retail out front, and that was a decision rather than an accident.
Here is the reasoning, since guests ask.
What we use on you and what you take home should match
This is the practical reason and it is the biggest one.
The color we put on your hair has a chemistry. The shampoo you wash it with has a chemistry. If those two things are working against each other, you lose. Not immediately, but by week three when your tone has gone brassy and you are wondering whether the color was any good.
When the salon line and the retail line are the same family, that fight does not happen. The shampoo we sell you is built by the same people who built the color we used, and it is designed to protect it rather than strip it. It sounds small. In practice it is the difference between color lasting ten weeks and color lasting five.
It also makes us better at our jobs. Our stylists know one line properly rather than five lines vaguely. When someone asks what to use for a dry scalp and colored ends, they get a real answer instead of a guess off a shelf label.
What the range covers
Davines is organized into families, which is more useful than it sounds once you know the map.
- ESSENTIAL HAIRCARE. The everyday core, split by need. There are families for dry hair, fine hair, curly hair, colored hair, and volume. This is where most guests live.
- NATURALTECH. Built around specific scalp and hair concerns rather than hair types. Where we go for scalp issues, shedding concerns, or hair that needs targeted work.
- ALCHEMIC. Tone maintenance. Pigmented shampoos and conditioners for keeping blonde, silver, copper, or brunette tones where we left them. This is the range that saves colored hair between appointments.
- OI. The nourishing everyday range built around roucou oil. Softness, shine, and manageability.
- MORE INSIDE. Styling. Texture sprays, creams, pastes, and finishing products.
- Masks and treatments. Deeper conditioning for when regular conditioner is not enough.
You can see what we carry on our Davines shelf, or browse by what you are looking for: shampoo, conditioner, styling, and treatment.
The sustainability part, without the speech
Davines is a certified B Corporation. That matters more than a label saying natural, because B Corp certification is an independent assessment of environmental and social performance that has to be renewed, rather than a claim a company makes about itself.
The company is based in Parma, Italy, and has been family run since 1983. They are open about their carbon accounting, their packaging choices, and their scientific garden work. We are not going to pretend a shampoo bottle saves the planet. But given a choice between a line that takes this seriously and one that does not, at similar quality, the choice is not hard.
How to actually pick something
The wall is a lot if you are standing in front of it alone. Two shortcuts.
Ask your stylist during your appointment, not at the desk. While your hair is wet and they have their hands in it is the moment they know exactly what it needs. Ask then. You will get a specific answer about your hair rather than a general recommendation.
Start with your biggest problem, not a full routine. If your color fades fast, start with a tone-maintaining shampoo. If your ends are rough, start with a mask. Buying one thing that solves your actual problem beats buying four things that solve problems you do not have.
And if you have colored hair, the single highest-value purchase is almost always the right shampoo. It is the thing touching your hair most often.

We are not going to pressure you
Worth saying plainly, because retail walls make people tense. Nobody here is going to walk you to the desk and stack four bottles in front of you.
What we will do is tell you what we used on your hair and why, because you asked or because it is relevant to how your color holds up. If you want it, it is there. If you would rather buy your shampoo at the grocery store, that is your call and we are still glad to see you in eight weeks.
The exception is when product choice is genuinely going to undo the service you paid for. If you have just spent $223 on a smoothing treatment and you are about to wash it with something full of sodium chloride, we are going to tell you. That is not a sales pitch, that is protecting your money.
Questions we get asked
What is Davines?
Davines is a professional hair care and color company from Parma, Italy, run by the Bollati family since 1983. It is a certified B Corporation, which means it is independently assessed on environmental and social performance rather than just marketing itself as sustainable. We use it for color in the salon and we retail it on our shelf.
Why does my stylist care what shampoo I use?
Because it undoes or protects the work. A harsh sulfate shampoo strips tone out of freshly colored hair and shortens the life of a smoothing treatment. When a guest tells us their color faded in three weeks, the shower is usually where the answer is. What you use at home is the majority of your hair's life.
Which Davines line is right for my hair?
It depends on what your hair needs rather than what your hair type is. NATURALTECH is built around specific scalp and hair concerns. ESSENTIAL HAIRCARE is organized into families for dry, fine, curly, or colored hair. ALCHEMIC is for maintaining and enhancing tone. OI is the nourishing everyday range. Ask your stylist at your appointment and they will point you at two or three rather than the whole wall.
Is professional shampoo actually worth the price?
It is more concentrated, so you use less per wash, and a bottle usually lasts longer than the price difference suggests. It also has to work alongside professional color rather than against it. If you have colored hair or a smoothing treatment, the honest answer is yes. If your hair is virgin and low maintenance, you have more freedom.
Do I have to buy products at the salon?
No, and nobody here works on commission-style pressure. We will tell you what we used on you and why, and if you want it, it is on the shelf. If you would rather not, that is genuinely fine. We would rather you come back for your next appointment than feel sold to on the way out.
